Updating Your Virus Protection
When you purchase virus protection software it comes with a built-in database or list of existing viruses and the fixes for them. Since new viruses emerge every day, the producers of these software programs publish anti-virus updates or"virus definitions" on a regular basis. It is important to go to the software producers' web sites and download the latest updates.
- How often should you check for viruses?
Some virus protection software can set to check for viruses every time you turn on your computer. Some come with a scheduler that you can set to scan your hard drive at a certain time every day/week. How often you check for viruses should be based on how your computer is used. Is the computer in a library and used by many people? Is it your computer but you download and get a lot of email? Is Outlook the email used on the computer? Do people download software to this computer? Use disks?
- How often should you update your virus software?
Update your "virus definitions" weekly just to be safe or as often as the software producer provides the updates. The most popular software programs have a built in "auto-update" feature that you can configure to download the updates automatically. This is usually free for the first year after you buy the software and then costs a minimal fee to subscribe for another year of the updater. The software will tell you that your subscription has expired and that it is time to update.
