You may notice that some
of your MSLN email has a SPAM tag in the subject line that looks like
this: {SPAM?} MSLN uses a software on the email server called
SpamAssassin to identify SPAM.
MSLN also uses software to
identify and remove viruses from email.
There are two rating levels for SPAM.
High scoring SPAM email gets a rating of 10 or above,
Low scoring SPAM is email that scores
between 5 and 10.
Currently email accounts for libraries and schools automatically get
the SPAM tagged and then the email gets sent along. A library or school
can choose to have mail that is tagged as SPAM automatically deleted so
it never gets "delivered". You can choose to have just High
scoring spam deleted and pass on the low level spam with the tag. Or you
can opt to have both levels of spam deleted. These options apply to all
mail at your school or library (so all mail delivered to myname@mylibrary.lib.me.us).
If you would like to reduce the amount of SPAM received at your
school or library just call the MSLN Help Desk at 1-888-367-6756. You
can start by having MSLN delete just the high
scoring SPAM and tag the low scoring SPAM. As you check the mail that is
tagged as SPAM you can see if any of the low scoring SPAM is actually
legitimate email.
If none of the mail that is tagged as
SPAM is "real email" you can then call the Help Desk and ask them
to automatically delete the low scoring SPAM as well. Tagging SPAM
is not an exact science so there is a chance that some email will
be tagged as SPAM that is not SPAM. So the decision to automatically
delete low scoring SPAM may result in some lost "legitimate email".
